America’s Return to the Pacific Islands – WSJ

Most Americans know the nations in the vast South and Western Pacific primarily from the island-hopping battles of World War II. The countries remain crucial to the defense of the United States, which is why the Biden Administration’s US-Pacific Island Countries Summit this week is a welcome one. event. The key is convincing Pacific leaders that the United States is here to stay.

The region has become an arena for competition between the United States and China, as Beijing builds a blue-water Navy and a global network of bases to project power. Chinese dominance in the region would complicate America’s ability to defend the so-called first island chain that includes Taiwan and Japan. And it would make US bases on Guam more vulnerable.
