Hurricane Ian is a reminder that the US is bad at this

“This mindset that we can build a fortress world where the rich and powerful are immune and everyone else is alone is inappropriate and unfair, and that seems to be happening in many places,” said Rachel Cleetus, policy director at the Climate and Energy program of the Union of Concerned Scientists told me. “If you’re really rich and have the means, maybe you can buy a little bit of time, but it’s not a lot of time, especially in places like Florida.”

Prisoners are at exceptional risk when it comes to climate change. Like Allen Brown and Akil Harris , For The Intercept, more than 6,500 prison facilities in the US are at serious risk of flooding. Unevacuated Lee County facilities were found to be at extreme risk of flooding. The group Fight against toxic prisons– which runs phone calls to pressure prisons, jails and detention centers to evacuate prisoners, organize mass releases and stockpile resources ahead of storms, notes there are some 176,000 people incarcerated in Ian’s path facing not only hurricane damage but also temperatures suffocating air, fetid conditions in their cells, and a lack of clean water to drink for days or even weeks afterwards.

Like the energy transition, responding to climate change is ultimately a planning issue; waiting until disaster strikes is too late. And as with clean energy construction, mass electrification and the reduction of fossil fuels, the decision to leave much of the responsibility for that planning in the hands of the private sector and a patchwork of voluntary local initiatives could financially ruin millions of people who already have difficulties. or dead.
